AUTUMN HUNT (aug-sept)
This type of hunting is very different from the other trophy hunting companies, on our autumn hunts, the hunter participate not only in the ordinary camp work. But also with carrying camp equipment and food etc. to the camp, carrying trophy and meat down from the mountain, and carrying meat, trophy and camp equipment back to the road after the hunt.
So the hunt is held very authentic and traditional hunting, in the same way as if it was normal hunters who had gone on a trip together. So it is sometimes hard work, and in the better condition you are, the more you get out of the trip.
So there is no carriers and additional hunting guides to take care of everything.
There are about 98 % success rate for reindeer, most are large animals.
For musk-ox our autumn succesrate is about 90%, and almost all animals are old bulls. But it is significantly more demanding than reindeer hunting due to the weight of trophies and meat, so the hunter must be able to carry his 35-45 kg trophy. Musk-ox hunt is done from our forward north camp.
So hunting musk-ox in autumn is extreme hunting, only for the wery well trained hunter.
Its possible to pay to have the guides to carry your trophy for you, its 10 euro pr kg, and its not included in the tip. Its regular extra payment, because else the guides would carry meat back to town for the bussiness.
Our hunting trips are four hunting days, in a area that also is one of our two konscession area from 2019, so you can be sure not to meet any other trophy hunters in the area.
We live in a tent camp out in the hunting area, the tent can be heated when it is cold. The temperature in the tent in the day time will be around 20 degrees, so it does not freeze, and you can get dried clothes, and stay in comfortable surroundings. There is no furniture in the tent, but a cooking island with oven in the middle of the tent and mattresses around the island.
By autumn hunting you need to bring a sleeping bag.
Transport from Kangerlussuaq to hunting camp is by car the first part, and where the road ends you have to walk around 5 km.
The entire first day goes with transportation to camp, everyone must help carry equipment and food etc. to the camp area.
There are two camp areas, each with its qualities.
The area is remote, so where we start hunting most of the other hunters turn back, so there will only be very few other hunters in the area although it is hunting season for ordinary hunting.
Transportation to and from the camp is a little demanding, all luggage, food, meat and trophies has to be carried about 2 km, and then sailed the rest of the way. So it's physically demanding.
There are ordinary hunting distance from the main camp less chance of musk oxen.
The area is really good for the reindeer, also large animals.
Around 8 km from our main camp we have a forward more primitive camp, it's far from all other hunters, and there are several more options in huntingareas. There is from camp a few km to a larger lake where we have a boat for transport of meat and trophies from the hunting area around the lake.
The area is just as good as the area of the main camp for reindeer, but more often there are also musk-ox in this area.
The forward camp is only for the well-trained, the trip back with the trophy and meat is quite demanding.
The hunt is done on foot. So you have to be in a fairly good condition, so you can walk 5 km out, and 5 km back with 30 kg on your back in varied terrain.
There will be one hunting guide per 2 hunters.
Non hunters can walk along during the hunt, or be in the camp at will. But there will be no hunting guide in the camp during the day, so no hunters in camp must look after themselves, and make sure they do not go out in the mountains and get lost.
It can be about minus 10 at night in late September, and plus 5-10 degrees during the day, warmer in early September. So early September can be wonderfully warm and summer -like, very suitable for accompanying wives / girlfriends, while the end of September often have better hunting and more beautiful trophies, but often too cold for not hunters waiting in the camp.
The catering is plain food, oatmeal with milk, bread and cold cuts, freeze-dried food for dinner if we are not near the camp, hot food in the evening where we most eat any meat from slaughtered animals, reindeer and musk steaks, as well as tea and coffee.
You can bring a limited amount of beer and soda.
Its okay to enjoyed a beer or a whiskey or two in the evening, but not during the hunt.
Day 1, transport to camp
Day 2-5, hunting from the camp.
Day 6, transport to Kangerlussuaq.
You can rent a rifle.
Hunter will help with all practical work, fix animals, cook, and other camp work.
After the hunt you stay at Kangerlussuaq Youth Hostel as included in the price, and its is possible to buy a trip to the ice cap.
As it is natural for any hunting, then although the success rate in the area is high, we cannot guarantee you will get animals. You must be realistic with your expectations, and much depends on you, your fitness and skill with a rifle.
For both reindeer and musk oxen in autumn hunting, you have to walk a lot, and especially the reindeer are very watchful, and is easily scared off if you are noisy or they see you. So it comes to using the terrain, and be vigilant as they can be difficult get close to.
When musk oxen and reindeer are shot, we use the rest of the hunt for small game hunting, there are foxes, little grouse and hares.
It is allowed to bring 5 kg of frozen meat on the plane to Denmark, so its possible to get a little meat from the hunt with you home. If it is frozen and well wrapped, it can keep frozen until you are in Denmark.
We carry additional safety equipment and satellite phone on all trips.
